Norway’s representative to the U.N. Human Rights Council, Ambassador Bente Angell-Hansen, read a statement during the 14th session of the council that expressed concern about the Iranian regime’s treatment of its citizens following disputed national elections a year ago.

15 June 2010 Children Exploited for Cheap Labor Worldwide  To lessen exploitive child labor globally, the root causes must be addressed by ensuring access to education for all children and helping families to overcome the poverty that contributes to child labor, President Obama says. “All of us must recommit ourselves to creating a world where our children have a brighter future, free of exploitive labor,” Obama said in observing the World Day Against Child Labor.

11 June 2010 Open Skies Treaty Fulfills Arms Control Needs  During three days of talks in Vienna, senior negotiators from 34 nations that stretch from Vancouver in the west to Vladivostok in the east met to assess implementation of the 10-year-old Open Skies Treaty — a step that is taken every five years. The treaty permits nations to conduct unarmed aerial observation flights over the territories of the treaty’s members, with notification, as a practical means of verifying compliance with arms control and nonproliferation agreements.

During a news conference after their meeting, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and his British counterpart, Liam Fox, said they discussed a variety of issues, including Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Afghanistan, an upcoming British defense and security review, the need for NATO reform, and the threat terrorism poses to the world.

08 June 2010 Computer Hackers in White Hats  Vint Cerf, the computer scientist often called the father of the Internet, looked out at the audience gathered beneath the chandeliers of the Benjamin Franklin Room and observed, “This is probably the geekiest gathering ever in the history of the State Department.” The words were a tribute to an assemblage of 150 software developers and computer-code writers who were giving up their weekends to trade ideas and design applications for disaster response and relief.

North Korea persists, after 59 years of futile efforts, in trying to convince the world that the United States used chemical and biological weapons during the Korean War. The North Korean claims are false, and documents discovered in the Soviet archives in the 1990s reveal that the Soviets knew the charges were fraudulent as long ago as 1953.

A proposed amendment to the annual U.S. Defense Department authorization bill would protect cultural artifacts from seizure for a foreign government’s debt if the artifacts are held by institutions such as museums and libraries.

02 June 2010 U.S. Embassy Sponsors Songwriting Workshop for Schoolchildren in Bristol In April the U.S. Embassy London sponsored a songwriting contest for eighteen Fairfield High School students from diverse backgrounds. Three instructors from the U.S.-based Modern Improvisational Music Association (MIMA) led the workshops. MIMA Music has now created this Youtube video, Talk of the Town 2010, about the project.

28 May 2010 Obama: We Will Stop Gulf Oil Leak  President Obama said the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico is a tragedy that is difficult to stop, but the U.S. government is exploring all reasonable strategies in an effort to plug the leak and mitigate the ecological and economic damage. Speaking to reporters at a White House press conference, Obama said the federal government is overseeing the actions taken by British Petroleum to plug the leak at its offshore well, saying government officials are “authorized to direct BP in the same way that they’d be authorized to direct those same teams if they were technically being paid by the federal government.”

04 May 2010 United States Reveals Size of Nuclear Arsenal  In an effort to strengthen global arms control, the United States has revealed that it has 5,113 operational warheads in its nuclear arsenal. “Increasing the transparency of our nuclear weapons stockpile, and our dismantlement as well, is important to both our nonproliferation efforts and to the efforts we have under way to pursue arms control that will follow the New START Treaty,” a senior U.S. defense official said at a Pentagon briefing.
